DIY I.T. – DI WHY?
Are you in the habit of performing your own IT maintenance? While the idea of updating your own drivers may seem like a simple task, as IT professionals we have seen untrustworthy updater software installed on PCs too many times. Dodgy driver software can include Driver Forge, Driver Guide etc. Often, your Antivirus may pick them up as being unsafe.
While these applications may have some limited updating capability, in reality, they are only there to serve their own purpose. Once installed they chew up your RAM, make your PC slower and they serve ads. They also install other unwanted software. Who knows what other nefarious activities these bots are doing on your device, they could even serve as malware in disguise.
Usually these driver updates are installed when a user sets out to fix their own IT issues. A google result returns a search with a promising application that will fix all these issues AND MORE! (remember the steak knives commercials? Act now and they will throw in additional elements that you don’t want… or need!)
Realistically there’s only a small chance that it will fix the issue, but a large chance that you will get showered with adverts that seemingly come from nowhere.
So next time you think about attempting your own IT maintenance, think about these dodgy driver update “gotchas”. If you are already on a Managed Service Package (MSP), your upkeep would be covered under the agreement.
